PRONIA is inviting individuals and community groups to the free premiere of its new video which sheds light on the harm created by gambling through the stories of people who have recovered from it.

The screening of Gambling Harm – Stories of Recovery which is in English with Greek subtitles, will take place at 3.30pm on Friday 13 May at the offices of PRONIA in Brunswick.

The video highlights the stories of people who have lived with the experience of gambling harm and who share their stories of hope and recovery.

“It is a snapshot of shared experiences and personal stories of financial devastation, heartbreak, support, reinvention and recovery. Also, it is a crucial reminder that problem gambling affects not only the person who gambles but also their family, friends, colleagues and employers,” PRONIA said in a statement.

The organisation has been addressing the problem for many years and has provided information, referrals and support to individuals and families impacted by gambling harm.

“Problem gambling is a big concern in our community. Help to overcome gambling is available, effective and attainable,” said Mary Sophou, PRONIA’s Manager of Family and Community Services. “By showcasing the stories of people with lived experience of gambling harm we aim to help reduce the stigma associated with it and to reassure individuals, families and communities impacted by problem gambling that there is hope for recovery. The film is short but the message is very powerful. Everyone’s journey is different but what all the stories have in common is the courage, strength, perseverance and the success of the recovery journey.”

The Chairman of the Board of Victorian Responsible Gambling Association, Tass Mousaferiadis, is the guest speaker who will also introduce the video. PRONIA CEO Tina Douvos-Stathopoulos and participants in the making of the video will also introduce the film.

In 2017-2018 Victorians lost $5.81 billion dollars through different types of gambling. “Playing the Pokies” contributed to a loss of $2.69 billion. According to Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation research, about 550,000 Victorians experience some form of harm from gambling each year. And for every person who experiences severe harm, up to six others will be affected, particularly friends and family members.
