A judgment call ahead of the 21 May election has reportedly cost Greek Australian MP Alex Hawke, missing out in the Coalition’s new frontbench under new leader Peter Dutton.
The Federal Opposition Leader announced the new opposition ministry on Sunday alongside Nationals leader David Littleproud who confirmed six frontbench members would be from his party.
Not the case for Liberal MP Alex Hawke though.
Previously the Immigration minister, Mr Hawke, along with former Employment minister Stuart Robert, are the two Morrison allies who have been demoted in the makeup of the Coalition’s shadow ministry.
Mr Robert will serve as Shadow Assistant Treasurer, while Mr Hawke was left out of any shadow ministry role. It was reported last week that Mr Hawke’s involvement in Liberal candidate preselections in key NSW seats was criticised from senior Liberal party members over the damaging effect it had on the party’s election odds.
Meanwhile, the Liberals new shadow cabinet made headlines with 10 out of the 24 members being women, with Liberal leader Peter Dutton speaking of a line-up with “some fresh faces”.
“We have incredible depth of talent — not just on the front bench, but on the backbench as well.
“I’m cognisant of trying to bring people through for an opportunity,” Mr Dutton said.
Amongst the new line-up, Deputy Leader Sussan Ley will become shadow minister for women and skills, training and industry and Michaelie Cash will be shadow minister for employment and workplace relations.
Karen Andrews takes the portfolios of home affairs, as well as child protection and prevention of family violence.
Anne Ruston will take on the health and aged care shadow role, while Marisa Payne was assigned the role of cabinet secretary, following an initial request not to be considered for the shadow cabinet.
“Old” faces that remained include former cabinet minister Alan Tudge who had stepped out following allegations of abuse against him by a former staffer. Mr Tudge has been named as Shadow Education Minister.
In other appointments, Angus Taylor will be shadow treasurer and former Nationals Leader Barnaby Joyce takes the veteran affairs portfolio.
