Greek-Australian nurse Helen Zahos has travelled to Europe to offer assistance to war torn Ukraine.
Last week Ms Zahos departed for her latest mission to Moldova via Poland, to provide medical assistance, support and humanitarian help to those fleeing the war in Ukraine.
Ms Zahos has worked with many cultures throughout her career, including Indigenous Australians, asylum seekers and people with disabilities. She offered emergency assistance to the victims of the Bali bombings, the refugees on Christmas Island, Lesvos, Kenya and Iraq.
On her flight to Poland where she will stay for two days before reaching Moldova, Ms Zahos had an impromptu meeting with the Prime Minister of Moldova Natalia Gavrilița.
“The Prime Minister was on my flight returning from an important meeting with a prince in Doha, so I spoke with her and her secret service,” Ms Zahos told Neos Kosmos.

“I feel good. I have contacts here too. The plan is to get to the border in Moldavia (Moldova) and continue from here to provide extra assistance to Ukrainian refugees and see where we go from there.”
Before parting ways, Ms Zahos presented the Prime Minister with an unplanned but heartfelt gift from Down Under.
“I reached inside my bag and pulled out a little stuffed koala I had with me… I said to her ‘this koala is a gift all the way from Australia’,” she said, adding that Ms Gavrilița had tears in her eyes.
“Although I can only provide my skills to help in Moldova, for Ukraine, it is a symbol of hope and that we stand with you in solidarity.”
