The Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA), held its AGM and elections on Wednesday 15 June 2022 where it elected new officers.

The new chairman Carlo Carli is a former Victorian Labor politician, the two new deputy chairs are Greek Australian, Peter Doukas OAM from NSW and Jill Morgan AM the former director of Multicultural Arts Victoria. Another Greek Australian, Emanuel Valageorgiou from NSW will join Dr Edwin Joseph from the Northern Territory to take up the other two executive roles.

The new elected officers will join the chairs of each state and territory representatives to form the new FECCA board.

Mr Carli has been an advocate of multiculturalism, access and equity, human rights, and has considerable skills in management, governance, and community development.

He is fluent in Italian, Spanish and English and is conversationally competent in French.

He spoke to Neos Kosmos as he headed into his first FECCA meeting on Friday, and said that he was “committed to multiculturalism, and social justice.” He added that he would ensure that independent multicultural media “are part of FECCA’s agenda”.

“Australia is moving toward an era of complexity and intersectionality it has never seen before, where multiculturalism and diversity are mainstreaming,” said Mr Carli.

“FECCA is at the right place at the right time and will be needing resources to grow and expand its invaluable work.

The new chair of FECCA thanked his predecessor, Mary Patetsos “for her leadership and service to FECCA and multicultural communities.”

The new executive officers of FECCA, Mr Carli said, along with our CEO and staff, “will harness the energy, commitments and recommendations, to advance multicultural Australia much further along”.
