GREEK REBETIKO SESSIONS

Commonly known as the Greek Blues, Rebetika is far more deeper than this simplified title, Rebetiko is storytelling spanning love, loss, drugs, and heart-breaking refugee tales. Rebetiko has always been the music of the poor and the dispossessed, combining different musical styles of the region and with lyrics describing the joy, the sorrow, and the difficulties of everyday life. Join Sotiris Kiokpasoglou and Con Kalamaras the first Saturday of July, August and September. Crepes, cocktails, drinks and bar snack available on the night. This is a Pay As You Feel (PAYF) event, meaning you can choose how much you contribute when booking your ticket. If the show has not sold out online, walk-ins are welcome and PAYF contributions can be made on the night at the bar.

ZOY FRANGOS: VARIATIONS

Zoy Frangos is the son of a Greek migrant father and Indigenous-Australian mother, and is in many ways a ‘typical’ Australian. This show tells Zoy’s own personal and musical story. From his childhood in Ballarat, Zoy has since found his place on the stage. He performed in Pecan Summer, the world’s first Indigenous opera composed by Deborah Cheetham, understudied Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar and was seen most recently with Tina Arena in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical EVITA. Backed by a powerhouse band and joined by his wife Elisa Colla, Zoy tells his story with honesty and humour. Be blown away by his variations on classic songs like ‘Bring Him Home’, ‘Jailhouse Rock’ and the theme from The Godfather.

When: 18 July 2022

ADFAS: MYTHS THAT MATTER

Not all myths are created equal. The Greeks and Romans told hundreds of stories about the life and loves of Gods and heroes. Many of these stories have been forgotten. However, a number have captured our imagination and provided inspirations to generations of artists. Myths that Matter – The influence of Greek myths in the visual arts lecture examines these influential myths and why they have proven to be so important to artists from Botticelli to Picasso by Professor Alastair Blanshard. Myths discussed include the Labours of Hercules, Prometheus and the Oceanides, Perseus and Medusa, Apollo and Daphne, Mercury and Psyche, the Minotaur, and Pygmalion and Galatea. Professor Blanshard is the inaugural Paul Eliadis Professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Queensland. He grew up in Brisbane before undertaking doctoral studies at Cambridge and became a lecturer at Merton College, Oxford. He also taught at the University of Reading and later the University of Sydney while he has authored a significant number of books and publications on the classical world.
