The annual inflation rate in Greece rose to 12.1% in June, according to data published by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) on Friday.
While slightly lower than the 13 % rate that was expected, the June increase from 11.3 % in May reflects major price hikes affecting beyond energy products, basic goods and a range of transport services.
ELSTAT said that the consumer price index rose 1.6% in June from the previous month.
Notable price increases include the following sectors:
- Housing 31.5%
- Transport 25%
- Food and beverage 12.6%
- Hospitality 6.5%
- Alcohol and tobacco products 0.9%
Analysts point out that amidst the global energy crisis and fears for even greater problems ahead with natural gas sufficiency, there are no signs of deceleration of price increases in the energy and food sectors.
The ELSTAT data reveal the largest annual price hikes were recorded in energy products, namely in natural gas (117.7%), electricity (70.4%), heating oil (65.1%), and other types of fuel such as gasoline and diesel (45.6%).
Meanwhile, also announced on Friday was the decision by the Public Debt Management Agency in Greece to reopen its recent 10-year benchmark bond issue on Monday, with the aim of drawing additional liquidity of 500 million euros from the market.
Maturing on June 18, 2032, the paper has an interest rate of 1.75%.
