In a heartfelt post on social media, Heidelberg United FC’s management announced the passing of its first President George Baniscas at the age of 91 years.
He led the committee that attracted large numbers of migrants looking for opportunities to help settle in Australia and socialise in the 1950’s and beyond.
Until a couple of years ago when his health made it hard for him to attend the Village, he was always present at every game and every event with his wife Christina by his side.
“His commitment to the Club that he founded with a group of his friends, will always be remembered,” the announcement said.
“We know that Heidelberg United was always in heart and thoughts. As a friend and Club forefather, he will be deeply missed, and our thoughts and best wishes are with his wife and family at this time.”
