Two sailboats carrying dozens of asylum seekers arrived on Kythira island early Wednesday (Greece time).

The first boat nearly crashed on rocks, however, no one was reported injured or missing, according to the coast guard.

The coast guard said that the first sailboat had been carrying 97 people, 93 of them from Afghanistan, three from Turkey and one from Pakistan, including five women and five children.

The second boat arrived around midday, carrying a yet unidentified number of people whose nationalities were not immediately known, Kathimerini reported.

Greece is the most common stop for asylum-seekers from the Middle East, Asia and Africa fleeing through water.

With increased patrols in the area several new arrivals are being deported back to Turkey without allowing them to apply for asylum, with many attempting the much more perilous journey to Italy.
