A grandmother or yiayia in Kerkyra had no thought for herself when she dived into a well to rescue her four-year-old granddaughter who had fallen in on Wednesday.

Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported that the grandmother, aged 67, immediately plunged in when she realised the young child had fallen into the eight-metre deep well which had two metres of water.

Both grandmother and grandchild are reported to be unharmed after the Hellenic Fire Service arrived on the scene and used their specialised tools to rescue the two.

The grandmother and her grandchild were then taken to the Corfu General Hospital as a precaution.
