Athens giants AEK are reported to be in talks with Barcelona for their out-of-favour Danish forward Martin Braithwaite.

The Spanish national daily Mundo Deportivo reported that AEK are in talks with Barcelona regarding the Danish international (60 caps) who helped the national team to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Euro 2020 competition.

The former Middlesbrough player joined Barcelona in February 2020 from Leganes as an emergency signing to bolster a side hit by injuries. During his time with Barcelona Braithwaite scored important goals but failed to establish himself as a regular player.

With the arrival of Xavi in 2021, it was made clear that the Dane did not fit into the new manager’s plans. Braithwaite refused to leave Barcelona in the January transfer window earlier this year but Mundo Deportivo reported that he is changing his stance as several Spanish clubs showed an interest in him although the wage package was thought to be a potential problem ahead of the 1 September Spanish transfer deadline.

Athens could well be Braithwaite’s next destination with the Greek transfer window remaining open until 15 September.
