The humble Sardella (Sardine) is set to be celebrated again when the Mytilenian Brotherhood of Sydney revive their annual Sardella Day on 18 September.
The tradition harks back to the Sardella Day celebrated in Lesvos where the Sardella is fished in the Gulfs of Gera and Kalloni. Of course, there are different to enjoy the fish the three most popular being barbecued on an open fire, fried on the pan or baked in the oven (Plaki).
At the Sardella Day event which will be held at the Mytilenian House in Canterbury, resident chef Ari Chatzigeorgiou, will prepare mezethakia to go with dishes featuring horta, black-eyed beans, skordalia among others.
The OPA OPA will provide live music while the Sydney Greek Dancing School’s adult dancers guided by Maria Hoularias will add to the spectacle of the occassion.
