Greek customs officers located and seized a large shipment of cocaine at the port of Piraeus worth approximately €1,938,000 (AU$ 2,885,947).

The container was bound for Thessaloniki and had set out from Ecuador.

The cocaine, which was divided between 40 packages weighing just over a kilogram each, was identified during an x-ray scan of the incoming shipping container conducted by customs officers.

With the help of the narcotics squad, authorities located a suspicious organic substance in its refrigeration system. The container was placed under strict monitoring, and following approval by the relevant prosecutor, the Hellenic Police Narcotics Division and the Coast Guard moved it to Thessaloniki where arrests were made, Kathimerini reported.

This is the second big cocaine bust in Piraeus since Monday, when officers seized another large shipment worth 6 million euros.
