To commemorate 100 years since Australia’s first men’s ‘A’ international against New Zealand in 1922, the Socceroo’s have announced their “Team of the Century” after lengthy deliberations between supporters and sports historians.

It’s a star studded 23-player lineup featuring the best of the best. From Cahill to Kewell there’s broad spread across the field.

Over 110,000 individual player and coach selections were submitted digitally by supporters from August through September.

On top of the 16 fan selections, Football Australia’s historian panel picked another seven players to be immortalised on the historic list.

But keen-eyed fans will notice a distinct lack of Greeks among the pick. There’s not a single player in the stack who sports a Greek heritage.

There is a touch of Hellenism in the coaching department, however, where Ange Postecoglou, described as the most successful Australian coach of all-time, has been picked to assist Guus Hiddink.

Still, the list shows a distinct lack of recognition for a culture so enthralled by the electric attraction of football, the world’s sport.

You wouldn’t have been out of place to expect to see names like Stan “The Man” Lazaridis, who represented Australia 60 times, or Charlie Yankos, an order of Australia recipient and 30 time captain of the national team.

But seems like it wasn’t meant to be, alas, not much luck for the Greeks this century… maybe we’ll have better luck in another 100 years.
