It was Melbourne City who earned bragging rights in the derby with crosstown rivals Victory, recording their third straight win to continue a strong start to their title defence.

The reigning premiers sealed a comfortable success over Melbourne Victory in the headline game of the A-League’s third round, becoming the only club yet to drop a point in the process.

Arthur Papas’ Newcastle Jets secured a deserved win against Wellington, while Perth downed Central Coast for their maiden triumph this season.

Western United got their first point on the board in a draw with Macarthur, with the Wanderers also playing out a stalemate with Brisbane.

Sydney FC and Adelaide shared the points in a highly entertaining fixture to make it three draws for Sydney’s clubs this weekend.

Central Coast-Perth Glory 1-2

Perth came from behind to procure an excellent victory on Sunday evening, causing a big upset over the Mariners in their opening home match of the campaign.

The Gosford side took the lead in the 21st minute after a powerfully driven shot into the bottom left by winger Sam Silvera.

Glory midfielder Giordano Colli made it level close to the break, tapping the ball in following a save by goalkeeper Danny Vukovic (43′).

Winger Aaron McEneff put the WA club ahead after pouncing on a loose ball in the box, dribbling past Vukovic to smack it into an empty net in what proved to be the winning goal (56′).

Defender Nectarios Triantis made his club debut with a five-minute cameo off the bench to close out the match.

Sydney FC-Adelaide Utd 2-2

Former Sky Blue Harry Van der Saag intervened with a crucial goal to make both sides share the spoils after an enthralling back-and-forth contest.

The Reds went into half time ahead via a goal from left back Ryan Kitto, who dribbled his way into the box and finished the ball into the bottom right (13′), though they were dealt a late blow in the first half when striker Hiroshi Ibusuki was given a contentious straight red (40′).

Sydney came out of the break firing as winger Joe Lolley hit the ball into the bottom right (48′), before Patrick Wood tapped in four minutes later to take the hosts in front.

Adelaide winger and former Sydney player Van der Saag then popped up with a vital header, directing captain Craig Goodwin’s cross into the goal to help the South Australians escape with a point.

Sky Blues coach Steve Corica was impressed with his team’s performance but did highlight the need to be better at the back.

“We have to defend better, so that’s the key for next week. We’ve got a couple of experienced centre-backs out but we have to defend better,” Mr Corica said post-match.

Melbourne Victory-Melbourne City 0-2

Two rapid-fire first half goals were enough for City to bag the win on Saturday evening as they remain the only club with maximum points thus far.

City’s lethal marksman Jamie Maclaren scored his fourth of the season when he converted his penalty into the bottom right (17′) and the defending premiers soon made it two through an own goal from left back Enrique Lopez Fernandez following a corner (19′).

Victory captain Josh Brillante then made things worse when his late challenge saw him sent off for a second yellow (35′) and they were never able to recover.

George Timotheou played the full game in the heart of Victory’s defence for Victory, with Chris Ikonomidis playing the first 64 minutes and Nathan Konstandopoulos coming off the bench for the last seven.

Melbourne Victory manager Tony Popovic was highly positive, believing the result was not a fair representation of the game.

“Today it’s more disappointment for the players because I think today they were excellent…I thought we were the better team from the start until the end. The scoreline doesn’t reflect that,” Mr Popovic said post-match.

Western Sydney-Brisbane Roar 1-1

Brisbane’s Charlie Austin was able to help the Roar hold the Wanderers to a draw as they dropped points for the first time this term.

Western Sydney took an early lead after striker Sulejman Krpic latched onto an over-the-top ball and struck it past goalkeeper Jordan Holmes (5′).

The Queenslanders found an equaliser through Austin, with the Englishman’s effort going in off the left post in the final decisive moment of the match (50′).

Newcastle Jets-Wellington Phoenix 3-1

The Jets came out on top after a furious first half which featured all four goals of the contest.

Arthur Papas’ side went ahead just four minutes in when left back James McGarry scored a brilliant long shot into the bottom right, and midfielder Beka Dartsmelia doubled their lead with an even better effort from range which sailed into the top left (16′).

Wellington winger Bozhidar Kraev halved the deficit with his own long-range strike into the bottom left (39′) but forward Trent Buhagiar restored the two-goal lead with a header into the bottom right (44′).

Star forward Kosta Barbarouses played the full game for the Phoenix while Kosta Grozos came on for the final five minutes for Newcastle.

Western Utd-Macarthur FC 1-1

The current champions are finally off the mark after coming back to earn a draw against the Bulls.

The Australia Cup champions pulled in front after a ball from winger Craig Noone was headed in by right back Matthew Millar (24′).

Lachlan Wales stood up for the Victorian side, sliding in to finish off wing back Josh Risdon’s low ball across goal (69′).

Greek Australian James Troisi played until the 91st minute for Western United while Jonathan Aspropotamitis and Jerry Skotadis featured for Macarthur, the latter coming off in the 64th minute.
