Tragedy struck in Crete in the early hours of Sunday, when a “huge rock” fell from a hillside and crushed two rooms at a coastal hotel, killing one woman as she slept and injuring her young son.
The unfortunate woman from Slovenia was staying in a beachside complex built under the rocky hillside of Ierapetra in the Sitia region of Crete. She was visiting the area with her husband and her eight-year-old son. The victim’s 51-year-old husband was in a different room and was unhurt, but the 47-year-old woman and her son were buried under the debris when the rock crushed two rooms of the rental apartments.
Around 50 firefighters responded to the scene and managed to rescue the boy after an hour of digging through the rubble. The boy’s mother was found dead.
The family had been due to leave Crete on that morning that tragedy struck.
