Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos and long-term member of Oakleigh celebrated with Oakleigh Cannons their 50th anniversary and the most successful year for the club so far.

The club, that was founded in 1972 has been named NPL Victoria Champions with a thumping 5-0 Grand Final win against South Melbourne in what was their 38th competitive match of a mammoth 2022 season.

“NPL Victoria Champions. Semi Finalists in the Australia Cup. This club has a proud history and a very exciting future. A huge program for boys and girls and big plans for women’s football too,” Mr Dimopoulos said.

“Congratulations on 50 years in our community! I Look forward to the next 50, with even more silverware.”

Mr Dimopoulos went on to announce that the Andrews Labor government is investing $4 million for an upgrade of the Cannons facilities with $2 million from the federal Labor government to be delivered in partnership with Monash Council.

“Community sport, local facilities and a whole lot of pride for a club that inspires,” he added before thanking his good friends Cr Paul Klisaris and Clare O’Neil MP. “Proud to have worked so closely with them to support the Cannons,” the minister concluded.
