The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia released a statement Wednesday informing the Orthodox community and the general public that emails are being sent out from a catfish account pretending to be Archbishop Makarios.

The Archdiocese said that the Archbishop has fallen victim of identity theft through the use of electronic accounts (emails), which falsely bear his name and title.

According to the statement an unspecified number of misleading messages have been sent out from the fake accounts.

“We caution people who have received or who will receive in the near future such emails, not to respond to them before confirming their reliability by carefully evaluating their content, checking the sender’s email address and, if deemed necessary contacting by phone the offices of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia,” the statement said, confirming that the Archdiocese has already made contact with the relevant prosecuting authorities.

An investigation is underway.
