According to a report by the European Committee on Organ Transplantation, Greece remains at the bottom of the rankings in the EU.
With only 52 of its deceased citizens having been organ donors (5 per 1 million people) last year, Greece sits just above Bulgaria and Romania (2.5 donors per million of people), Luxembourg (3.3 donors) and Cyprus (4.2 donors).
At the top of the list sits Spain (40.8 million donors), Portugal (29.6 million donors) and Croatia (29.5 donors).
Greece saw 20.9 patients in one million receive an organ in 2021, when in Spain 99.7 patients per million of citizens benefited.
In the most recent study published on statista.com on 26 October 2022 under ‘Organ transplantation activity per million population in Greece 2019-2021 by organ’ by Conor Stewart, Greece sits low on the list of EU countries.
Only 16.8 kidney transplants were carried out in 2021 while, 1,624 patients were registered to receive a kidney. The number has increased from 1,383 the year before.
There were 2.3 liver transplants per million population in 2021, the lowest rate since 2016 with 155 people awaiting a liver transplant in Greece.
There were 37 needing a heart transplant and a dozen patients waiting for a lung transplant.
