After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, The Greek Orthodox Parish and Community of Burwood and District celebrated and shared Greek cultural heritage and spirit with the local community on Sunday, 13 November.

Βeginning in 2012, Greek Street Fair Burwood has brought the traditional outdoor Greek panigiri to Sydney and has grown to be one of the community’s cherished cultural events.

The Greek Street Fair Burwood has been embraced by the entire Sydney community, bringing together people of all ages and cultural backgrounds.

The festival this year included Greek dancing groups from all over Sydney, including the parish’s local dancing group The Nassibian Dancers, featuring local children, teens, young adults and adult students. The group has been associated with our Parish and Community for more than 40 years and has always been a strong supporter of Burwood’s functions and events.

The Kalymnian Association of NSW Dancers also took to the stage with their traditional Kalymnian dances and costumes as well as popular group Sydney Sizmos that have taken to the festival stage every year since the beginning. Pontoxeniteas NSW also performed while the school’s teachers, Alexandra and Kosta Papoulidis played the lyra live.

Aside from dance performances Greek Street Fair Burwood offered attendees live Greek music, Greek soulvaki, loukoumades and mezethes with the famous Greek hospitality taking centre stage. In addition to the fun and delicacies, the event included activities for children and teenagers, competitions, market stalls, prizes and the chance to meet Mitsos the Greek Street Fair Donkey.

The festival also catered to Christmas shopping needs with Greek inspired clothes, shoes, accessories and homewares, jewellery, candles, succulents, preserved flowers, donkey milk skincare, icons, books, clothes for children and adults, food pantry items including tea varieties and pasta, tea towels and more.
