Greece’s Head of the Armed Forces, General Konstantinos Floros met with United States Army Chief of Staff, General James C. McConville on Wednesday, the two discussing issues facing the region.

It’s the second meeting between the two this year, coming after Floros’ visit to the US in July. McConville is in Greece at the invitation of the country’s Chief of General Staff Charalambos Lalousi.

Floros wrote on social media that the talks “discussed issues of mutual interest, focusing on current defence and security challenges, the consequences of revisionism for the wider area, as well as the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine for the defence and security architecture of the Euro-Atlantic area.”

In the same post Floros acknowledged the close nature of military cooperation between Greece and the US which he noted as “constantly deepening with operational cooperation and co-training activities, strengthened by the Updated Mutual Defence Agreement (MDCA) between Greece and the USA.”

Describing Greece as a “trusted partner and ally” of the United States and NATO, Floros highlighted the important role played by military infrastructure in the Greek cities of Volos and Alexandroupolis, and Souda bay near Chania in Crete; which he says play a central part in strengthening the alliance’s eastern flank.

Lastly the two Generals discussed the multilateral initiatives that Greece has developed at the military level with its Balkan neighbours, Arab countries such as Egypt and with Israel as well as Greece’s close defence relationship with France “which as a whole promote the safety and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond.”
