Crowds flocked to the 42nd Semaphore Greek Festival this weekend defying hot weather and windy conditions to enjoy a jam-packed schedule of competitions, live music by local artists and traditional dance groups from all over the state.

Running from 11 am to late both days in Adelaide’s Semaphore Beach, this year’s festival, supported by state and local government featured a new partnership with the Bank of Sydney.

Among those who attended was South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas in the company of his young daughter Sophie.

The two-day event was the culmination of hard work by the Port Adelaide Greek Orthodox Community and their team of over 300 volunteers.

Dj apostal kickstarted the action on both days, with the line-up of local musicians and dance groups including the band zeus, enosis band, and local dance groups of Port Adelaide and the Lemnian, Pontian and Messinian communities.

Competitions for food-lovers attracted big crowds with staples pita, loukoumades, yiros and dolmathes on offer at the various stalls, while sunset views on Saturday night compensated revellers who endured the heat of the day.

Semaphore is considered one of the state’s most popular multicultural festivals and this year’s theme #happyagain was a testament to that inviting people of all ages and backgrounds for an immersion to all things Greek.
