Melburnians are invited to join the Hellenic Women’s Network Vic HELIADES at a 12 February event to celebrate the new year and meet folklore author from Greece, Stella Petrikis Traganida.

Organised as a book launch event by the Greek Community of Melbourne and HELIADES, the Sunday afternoon session will include a discussion with the author and the cutting of the vasilopita for 2023.

Born and raised in the small town of Ambelonas in the Tyrnavo region of Larissa, Thessaly, Ms Petriki Traganida studied English, German, French and Political Sciences at the University of Athens. In later years she worked in secondary education.

Following her retirement, she has been dedicating her time to volunteering, including for the Greek Red Cross and NGO Actionaid Hellas, also writing folklore literature.

Her debut book, published in 2003, ‘Memories of another life, in Ambelonas, Larissa’ centers around rural life in her birthplace throughout the last century.

‘Musical Listenings from Drymaia Fthiotida’, a book including folk songs from Roumeli, followed.

Her most recent publication was in 2017, a sorrowful novel based on a true story titled ‘The Circle of Lost Women’, while ‘Old Tales from Thessaly’, a collection of traditional folk stories preceded it in 2012.
