Eva Kaili, one of 14 European Parliament vice presidents arrested and charged in early December 2022 by Belgian prosecutors investigating allegations of financial corruption in Qatar and among senior policy-makers in Europe is to remain detained until her trial.

Eva Kaili was dismissed on 13 December from the vice presidency of the European Parliament over allegations of corruption. The Greek MEP and three other suspects were arrested by Belgian police as part of an investigation into suspected corruption and money laundering.

The former PASOK-KINAL MEP appeared before the pre-council chambers of the Tribunal of First Instance in Brussels on Thursday afternoon, AMNA reported.

The pre-council chamber confirmed Eva Kaili’s pre-trial detention with an official announcement from Brussels. Kaili can appeal the decision within 24 hours, but she will have to appear before the Indictment Chamber at the Brussels Court of Appeal within 15 days.

“Eva Kaili is currently being remanded in custody in Belgium as part of an unfolding investigation in a case of corruption, money laundering and criminal organization within the European Parliament. The latest developments in this case will be made known through further press releases,” the announcement concluded.
