Greek Australian presenter and journalist, Patricia Karvelas, has been appointed an Honorary Professor by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology’s School of Media and Communication.

Karvelas, who began her professional career at the ABC and SBS 20 years ago, has worked across every medium of Australia’s media landscape in the years since.

From her work in print media as The Australian’s Victorian Bureau Chief and Editor, to her role as host and producer of the eponymous ‘Karvelas’ program on Sky News, the appointment comes as definitive recognition of her influential career.

Recognised for her outstanding contribution to journalism education, Karvelas has over the last five years supported the University’s journalism program across a range of projects.

She’ll now build on her engagement in various capacities as an Honourary Professor, continuing to aid students and staff with her keen insight on journalistic practice.

Professor Lisa French, Dean of RMIT’s School of Media and Communication said Karvelas’ outstanding skillset will be a boon to the journalism program.

“Patricia is one of the country’s most respected journalists,” she affirmed.

“A leader in broadcasting, she’s built a reputation as a passionate ally through her work with Indigenous Australians; we’re proud to welcome her.”

Currently presenter of ABC Radio National’s RN Breakfast, she’s also the co-host of the ABC’s popular weekly political podcast ‘The Party Room’ alongside Fran Kelly.

Speaking on her appointment Karvelas said “returning to my alma mater to take up this honorary professorial role gives me great pride.”

“I believe journalism has never been more important and I hope to be able to provide leadership for the country’s future journalists.”

Karvelas will give a public lecture on Thursday 9 March at The Capitol theatre in Melbourne to mark the beginning of her new role.
