A $2 million fight between boxer George “Ferocious” Kambosos Jr and fellow Aussie pugilist Liam Wilson is in the works.

It’s thought that the potential bout would make for one of the biggest domestic shows since Anthony Mundine took to the canvas against Danny Green in 2006.

Wilson’s been propelled to the status of a world-class talent following his heroic display against Mexico’s Emanuel Navarrete last Friday.

The Queenslander came close to humbling the Mexican champion when he dropped Navarrete, who’s been unbeaten for the last decade, in the fourth round of his world-title debut in Phoenix, Arizona.

While his shot at the world-title was unsuccessful, it was a matchup in the same vein as Kambosos’ hair raiser against Teófimo López in November 2021; one which saw the Greek become unified lightweight world champion via split decision.

News Corp reports that while Wilson ideally wants another shot at Navarrete, it seems unlikely he’ll get the chance, and so the 26-year-old has set his sights on Kambosos.

The 29-year-old Greek from Sydney lost his world titles in back-to-back defeats at the hands of American Devin Haney last year; an all Australian punch-on and a victory at that, would see him reclaim some lost ground.

“Given what Liam showed against Navarrete, it would be a massive all-Australian fight and one of the most exciting domestic fights in decades,” Wilson’s agent Steve Scanlan told News Corp.

“George is in his prime. It would be the fight of the year”

“He’s a Spartan warrior and Liam loves to entertain when he fights. It’s a fight the Australian public deserves to see, if Liam wins, it would really propel him into the mainstream,” he added.

While Wilson’s agent acknowledges that taking on Kambosos, who’s a weight division higher than his proposed challenger, would be “a risk”; the young fighter is apparently hungry for a challenge.

Kambosos, who boasts a 20-2 professional career with 10 victories by knock-out would certainly take the young hopeful to task if the fight gets the green light.

“George is a former world champion, he’s an Australian boxing legend, it makes sense for us to do it.”

According to Wilson’s management, negotiations to bring the bout to the masses will begin this week.
