The Hellenic Football Federation has announced the commencement of discussions with Football Australia on the possibility of hosting the Greek Cup in Austalia.
This comes following reports the Greek federation has been considering the possibility of hosting the ultimate match outside the country proper, opting instead for a locale abroad with a significant Hellenic diaspora.
Both England and Germany stand as co-contenders to host the game.
As of Monday, progress had been made in negotiations with the Premier League’s Crystal Palace on the possibility hosting the final at their stadium.
The German Football Association is yet to respond to the Hellenic federation’s request.
So, Australia’s put its best foot forward with eyes on the ball, as it were.
GCM President, Bill Papastergiadis has sent a letter to the Greek Football Federation’s President, Mr Panagiotis Baltakos.
Mr Papastergiadis drew attention to Melbourne’s status as “one of the world’s sporting capitals” one which “arguably as a city has the third largest Greek population globally.”
He went on stating “Melbourne is the home to over 35 football clubs of Greek origin and the Greek Community of Melbourne recently hosted a successful football tournament for many of those clubs,” referring to the well-received inaugural Greek Community Cup.
And concluded the letter urging “serious consideration” be given to the possibility of hosting the Cup final in Melbourne.
The Hellenic Football Federation released a statement Monday night noting that Football Australia had responded positively to the prospect of hosting the final in Victoria.
