AEK is in store for an epic challenge this weekend as they travel to face rivals PAOK in what looms as a huge match in the context of the premiership race.
The two eagles of Greek football go to war at “Toumba” stadium on Monday morning (AEDT) in the most anticipated contest of the Greek Super League’s 23rd round and the stakes are tremendously high with AEK locked in a fierce battle for the championship.
A win for Enosi would be enormous in their chances of finishing first, though they will have to accomplish a feat that only title rivals Panathinaikos have managed this season: beating PAOK at their home fortress.
The Thessaloniki side is on a 16-match unbeaten streak in all competitions with their last loss coming against AEK in the reverse fixture last October, making this a perfect opportunity for them to return the favour.
Panathinaikos will be following the result of this huge match with interest, although they will have to ensure they earn maximum points in their meeting with Volos at “Leoforos” Stadium on Sunday morning.
The “Trifylli” will be especially keen to defeat the tough Magnesia outfit in order to build up their confidence ahead of the derby with their bitter enemy, Olympiacos, next round.
The Piraeus giants themselves are set to challenge last-placed Lamia at “Athanasios Diakos” ground on Monday morning and they will be striving for the win with the hope of creating a further gap between themselves and PAOK, should they drop points against AEK.
Panetolikos hosts an ever-improving Ionikos team which has won seven points from their last three outings, though the Agrinio club will hope to make an example of them after being destroyed 6-1 last matchday by Olympiacos.
Aris goes away to play OFI on Tuesday morning and they are in desperate need of a victory after suffering three consecutive losses, a run which has put their top six aspirations in slight jeopardy.
Atromitos squares off with Levadiakos at home in what is a must-win game for the Peristeriotes who are still in the running for a play-offs spot, but they will have to drastically improve their form which includes three draws and one loss in their past four fixtures.
Asteras Tripolis takes on Giannina at home on Sunday morning in what could be a difficult contest for either side to be victorious as they have each drawn a significant number of times this term, eleven for the Arcadians and nine for the Epirus club.
