There are less than 10 days to go until the much-lauded Antipodes Festival once again graces Melbourne’s historic Greek precinct on 25 and 26 February.

Preparations are in full swing with vigorous work taking place behind the scenes to bring new elements and attractions to the renowned Lonsdale Street glendi.

This year’s main act as you may have heard, is famous vocalist Alkistis Protopsalti who’s reportedly eagerly counting down the days till she takes to the main stage to perform her most popular songs on Saturday, 25 February.

Leo Vlahakis, the Greek Community of Melbourne’s Community Outreach and Cultural Programs Chair shared his excitement about Protopsalti’s upcoming visit.

“We’re honoured that Alkistis will be performing at this year’s Antipodes. She’s an artist with more than 40 years’ experience in the industry,” he said.

“She’s successfully cultivated a following from all walks of life, we’re certain that it’ll be a show-stopping performance with an electric atmosphere.

GCM Vice President, Jim Bossinakis had this to say about Protopsalti’s upcoming performance.

“Having this opportunity to see a worldwide star live is priceless. I’m sure attendees will enjoy her amazing songs just as much as we do.”

This year the GCM’s partnered with Scoot Airlines to offer a return ticket to Greece to the winner of the infamous ‘Zorba till you drop’ competition on Saturday, 25 February; if you want that ticket, be prepared to dance your heart out till you’re the only one left.

2023 is shaping up to be a big one. With 80 stalls, three stages with live performances and extended trading hours at local Greek businesses across the weekend.

Over 70 hours of music and dance performances are scheduled for the weekend, in addition to cooking demonstrations, ‘Karagiozis’ shadow theatre, various competitions with prizes to be won and of course: impromptu street performances by festival-goers.

The cultural arm of the GMC, the Antipodes sees Melbourne’s Greek quarter transform into a giant street party, free to all comers.

Bringing together local and international performers, children’s activities and not to mention a lot of good food.

It’s the perfect way to celebrate the vibrant multiculturalism of Melbourne while exploring the beauty of Greek culture.
