Over 80,000 people attended this year’s St Basil’s NSW & ACT Greek Summer Festival, a turnout that did not go unnoticed by the Coalition state government when announcing a funding pledge for the next four years.
Minister for Multiculturalism Mark Coure made the commitment while present at the festival in Carss Park on Sunday, 12 February.
“We believe in helping celebrate our cultural diversity, and that is why we are committing $35,000 a year for four years to St Basils NSW & ACT to host its annual Greek Summer Festival.
“This is a great community event, which is for everyone to enjoy and partake in Greek culture,” Mr Coure said.
The annual pre-election pledge by the NSW Liberal and National Government, will amount to a total $140,000 investment over the course of four years.
Welcoming the funding commitment, St Basil’s Chief Executive Spiro Stavis said:
“The festival is devoted to Greek culture and especially to Aging Australians but is open to everyone to enjoy—it is a great opportunity for our residents and the greater community to spend time with family and friends.”
Running as a free entry all-day event, this year’s Greek Summer Festival was headlined by dimotiko singer from Greece, Gogo Tsampa.
Organisers credit it as ‘Australia’s biggest Greek BBQ’ boasting over 100 stalls from Greek organisations and community groups.
