You don’t need to hail from Mytilini to appreciate a good ouzo, and attendance numbers at Melbourne’s Ouzo Festival on Sunday speak to this.

Crowds defied the hot weather to have a drink or two at the annual festival taking place at the eastern suburb of Bayswater, hosted by the Lesvos Culture Club – Palesviaki Enosis of Melbourne and Victoria.

“Ouzo Festival, carries the flavour of Aegean Greece, and creates the right conditions for visitors to enjoy their ouzo under the trees while mingling with friends”, through which “we are reviving our island customs,” John Karanikolas, president of the Melbourne and Victoria Paliscian Association told Neos Kosmos.

The event, which started just before midday and lasted till late afternoon featured a live orchestra performance and dancing, delicacies to keep energy levels high and ouzo in abundance, with hundreds paying their to the landmark Greek spirit.

“Such events will rekindle the interest of young people in community events” Mr Karanicolas had said ahead of the event.
