Members of the Pan-Macedonian Association of Melbourne and Victoria and the Federation of Greek Elderly Citizen Clubs of Melbourne and Victoria met with City of Yarra mayor Cr Claudia Nguyen on 27 March.
The meeting took place at Richmond Town Hall during an afternoon tea event celebrating the outcomes of the council’s 2022 Annual Grants program.
As part of the program Yarra City Council awarded $2.3 million in grants to the local community between 2021 and 2022.
This included grants to the GOAA Parish of Holy Trinity Richmond Senior Citizens Club, the Greek Pensioners Club of North Fitzroy, the Halkidikion Elderly Citizens Club Melbourne and the Greek Elderly Club North Fitzroy and North Carlton.
The grants provided to Greek community organisations totalled $16,500 according to the council’s 2022 report.
Funds are earmarked for a variety of projects across the clubs, namely the organisation of Easter celebrations, social and recreational activities including excursions, health lectures and guest speakers for members.
Many of the organisations cite a desire to combat feelings of loneliness among our community’s elders through these initiatives.
The event also provided attendees the opportunity to mingle and network with fellow grant recipients, fostering ties between community organisations.
