There is all to play for this weekend in a major Double-headed eagles derby, with PAOK especially under pressure to win and keep their championship chances alive.
The Thessaloniki outfit hosts AEK at “Toumba” Stadium on Monday morning (AEDT) in the second round of the Greek Super League’s play-offs, and anything short of three points could see them fall too far behind in the nail-biting title race.
Enosi is similarly desperate to earn a statement victory and stay well in range of top spot after drawing and losing their last two fixtures, which has allowed their immediate rivals, Panathinaikos, to take the lead in first.
The “Trifylli” battles Volos at “Leoforos” ground in what is essentially a must-win game, with the Magnesia side the easiest team on paper to beat in the play-offs.
Volos will take comfort from the lack of expectations on them and thus play with freedom, something which could give them a slight psychological edge over their opponents who are under immense pressure to take the premiership crown.
Olympiacos challenges Aris at “Georgios Karaiskakis” Stadium and the Piraeus giants have as much to play for as any of their rivals, having well and truly gotten back in the conversation for first.
The reigning premiers find themselves only three points off the league leaders and are in great spirits, having won four of their last five matches.
The “yellow-blacks” still have their own ambitions to cling onto as they remain locked in a fierce fight for fifth place, which will be good enough to secure a European qualifying spot given the Cup is almost guaranteed to be won by one of AEK, Olympiacos and PAOK.
Levadiakos takes on seventh-placed Atromitos in the opening contest of the play-outs on Sunday morning, in what looms as a huge task for the “blue-greens” who are striving to escape from the bottom two.
Their immediate relegation rivals, Ionikos and Lamia, also have tough opponents lined up this weekend.
The Nikaia team (currently last) faces Asteras Tripolis (9th) at home, with the Arcadians fresh off an important win over Panetolikos in the previous round that has kept in the mix to finish top of the relegation group.
Lamia, meanwhile, travels away to face an Agrinio outfit desperate for three points after going four matches winless and falling into eighth, a fact they would like to rectify.
Giannina goes head-to-head with OFI at home in another big clash for the Epirutans, who find themselves only five points away from the relegation spots after failing to win in their last ten outings.
