The Minns Ministry is a reduced Cabinet of 22 Ministers, but for the first time in New South Wales history, will be 50 per cent women (excluding the premier).
This cabinet includes two ministers of Greek background, Stephen Kamper and Sophie Cotsis. Kamper will be overseeing the portfolios of Small Business, Lands and Property, Multiculturalism and Sport, while Cotsis will handle Industrial Relations and Work Health and Safety. Additionally, Courtney Houssos, who is married to a Greek, will take on Finance and Natural Resources in the Legislative Council.
For the first time in NSW history, a woman will hold the position of Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council. Penny Sharpe will be responsible for Energy and Climate Change, Environment and Heritage, as well as the position of Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council.
Moreover, several other women will hold key portfolios for the first time in the state’s history, such as Yasmin Catley as the Minister for Police and Counter Terrorism, Tara Moriarty for Agriculture, Regional NSW and Western NSW, and Jihad Dib for Customer Service and Digital Government, Emergency Services, and Youth Justice.
The diverse and inclusive nature of the cabinet doesn’t stop there.
NSW’s newly appointed Attorney-General, Trish Doyle, will also be the first Australian Minister to be sworn in on the Bhagavad Gita, while Emma Husar will become the first NSW Minister to be sworn in on the Quran.
Premier Minns expressed his pride in the new team, saying “We have a lot of hard work in front of us, but my team and I are up to the challenge. Our priority is to help families and households deal with the increasing cost of living, the energy crisis, and to fix our schools and hospitals.”
This historic cabinet marks a significant step towards a more diverse and inclusive leadership team in New South Wales and sets an example for governments across Australia to follow.
