The Mixed Jury Court of Appeal of Athens has imposed a sentence of life imprisonment, as in the trial court, on the 33-year-old Bulgarian man who was found guilty for the murder of businessman John Macris in October 2018 outside his house in the southern Athenian suburb of Voula.
In addition, based on the court decision, the accused was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment and a fine of 1,000 euros for the offences of illegal carrying and use of weapons, while the court unanimously rejected the granting of mitigating circumstances requested by the accused.
In contrast, his 37-year-old brother, who was originally sentenced to 10 years in prison for simple complicity in manslaughter, was acquitted, by a majority, due to doubts.
“I want my husband. No decision will bring my husband back,” said Macris’ wife, Victoria Karida, who was at the Court of Appeal.
“We believe that this development has confirmed the obvious. The man who appeared in the video footage to murder Yannis Makris turned out to be the first accused. For Mrs Karida and her children, the question is still who sent the killers, who are the instigators,” stated the family’s lawyer, Yannis Marakakis.
