Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias has urged Greece to approach Greek-Turkish relations with cautious optimism, emphasizing the need to be careful and not naive. In an interview with private broadcaster SKAI television, Dendias acknowledged that it would be a mistake for Greece not to respond to Turkey’s gestures of extending a hand, but also acknowledged that the chances of success are limited.

“Greece should be optimistic but also careful and not naïve” as regards Greek-Turkish relations, Dendias said.

Dendias sees it as a “national duty to attempt to find common ground with Turkey.”

“It would be wrong for Greece not to reach out a hand corresponding to that which Turkey is extending,” Dendias said in an interview with private broadcaster SKAI television. He went on to underscore that the “chances of success are few, but it is our national duty to attempt it.”

“Turkey’s long-term interests converge with those of Greece and if the leadership reaches the same conclusion, this would be something positive,” he added.

Dendias highlighted that there is an unofficial consensus between Greece and Turkey that could potentially pave the way for resuming a serious dialogue after the elections, with the aim of finding a solution to their sole difference.

He also mentioned his personal relations with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, whom he has known for 17 years, and expressed his willingness to continue communication, stating that he has felt comfortable calling him on his mobile phone in the past.

“I was and always will feel comfortable calling him on his mobile phone,” he said, while noting that a difficulty arose when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan forbade all contact after the speech given by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the US Congress.

Dendias’ cautious approach reflects the complex and delicate nature of Greek-Turkish relations, where optimism must be tempered with realism. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, Dendias remains hopeful that a solution can be found through diplomatic efforts and dialogue.

His comments tend to highlight Greece’s willingness to engage in constructive diplomacy while being mindful of potential obstacles and challenges in the path towards improving bilateral relations with Turkey.
