Following a draw with Central Coast Mariners at Hindmarsh Stadium on Sunday evening Melbourne City FC has been crowned premiers of the A-League Men for season 2022-23 while Victorian rivals Western United defeated second placed Adelaide United.

“Congratulations to Melbourne City FC for a season of brilliant football which has been rewarded with the Premiers Plate and Club Championship,” APL CEO Danny Townsend said.

“They have showcased some of the best of the A-Leagues football with incredible performances from Socceroos and Matildas heroes like Jamie Maclaren, Matthew Leckie and Holly McNamara, and some brilliant young talent like Marco Tilio, Daniela Galic and Jordan Bos. We look forward to an exciting finals series.”

Melbourne City becomes the first ever men’s team to win the Premiers Plate in three consecutive years – Sydney FC’s women’s team achieved the same this season – and also celebrated becoming the first team to win the Premiers Plate and the Club Championship, the trophy for combined men’s and women’s points, in the same weekend.

The A-League Men’s finals series kicks off in May following the conclusion of the regular season on 29 April, and Melbourne City has locked in their spot as host of the semi-final at AAMI Park. With the other places for the finalists set to go down to the last weekend of the regular season, with several teams still in contention to make the top six.
