Cardinia Park was the place to be on the first of May as the Federation of Greek Elderly Citizen Clubs of Melbourne & Victoria and the Hellenic Women’s Federation of Victoria hosted the ‘Protomagia’ or change of season celebration.
The event, which is also a celebration of Labour Day, brought people together to enjoy a day filled with music, dancing, laughter, and food.
In Greece, 1 May is a public holiday where people spend time with their families, go wildflower picking, and make wreaths or ‘Stefania’. It is also a day to celebrate the achievements of workers, and rallies are held across the country.
The ‘Protomagia’ event in Cardinia Park attracted people from all over Melbourne, including the community of Lemnians, as well as clubs from as far away as Geelong. Seniors from the Dandenong Seniors Club in the electorate also joined in the festivities.

Around 1,000 seniors and their families came together for an afternoon of fun and camaraderie. Attendees also had the opportunity to indulge in refreshing frappes and homemade spanakopita.
The event was a testament to the power of community and unity.
“It was heart warming to see old friends reconnect and new friendships form. Everyone was in high spirits,” Lee Tarlamis told Neos Kosmos.
“Congratulations to everyone involved in organising the event and for bringing these communities together. Let us look forward to future celebrations filled with joy and togetherness.”
