A robotics team from the island of Kos in Greece have distinguished themselves and succeeded in winning first place in the Mission Challenge competition at the 11th World Robotics Championship which took place in Oradea, Romania last month.

The Sumo-Senseis team, from the Robotics and Informatics Learning Center Instudies coached by Kaiserlis Alexandros, consisting of Miltiadis Nikolis, Tasos Syris, Anastasis Aslanis, and Sifi Pachos, also made it to the quarterfinals in the popular Lego Sumo sports robotics competition, with their robot standing out for its originality and competitiveness.

Athletic robotics competitions are gaining global attention and popularity among robotics enthusiasts, challenging teams of all ages in the mechanics of the robot and in their algorithmic and computational thinking to solve problems and achieve the best possible result.

Some of the competitions include Sumo, where teams design a robot which must autonomously win the game by forcing the other robot out of the ring. Another popular competition is the line following one, where the robot has to follow a line and go from start to finish in the best time possible.

Depending on the line following category, the line can have curves or even obstacles.

“The victory of the Greek team in the Mission Challenge competition is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and passion for robotics,” Kaiserlis said.

“Their success is an inspiration to other young people interested in the field, and it is a great achievement for Greece and the island of Kos.”
