The Australian Hellenic Educators’ Association (AHEA), in collaboration with the NSW Department of Education, is gearing up to host this year’s Conference on Modern Greek education in primary and secondary schools, titled ‘New Ways’.

Scheduled to take place on Friday, May 26, the conference aims to foster discussions among educators and stakeholders on the advancement of Hellenic education in New South Wales (NSW) and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

The New Ways Conference aims to be a crucial forum for educators, administrators, and stakeholders to engage in productive discussions and shape the future of Hellenic education in Australian schools. By embracing fresh approaches and sharing insights, attendees will contribute to the growth and preservation of Hellenic language and culture for generations to come.

According to AHEA, primary level Hellenic language education is thriving while the secondary level is facing challenges, an issue that the New Ways Conference aims to address.

The conference will also host the presentation of the Phoevos Awards, that recognise excellence in Hellenic Studies at the primary level, as well as the Ayios Kosmas o Aitolos Awards, which honour teachers for their dedicated service to Hellenic education.

Prominent speakers from diverse backgrounds will grace the conference program, including Ioannis Mallikourtis, the Consul-General of the Hellenic Republic in Sydney. Dr Vasilis Adrahtas from Western Sydney University will delve into the significance of Greek in Australia by drawing lessons from the revitalisation of indigenous languages.

In addition, Dr Panayiotis Diamadis will explore the integration of Hellenic language within the context of Australian Hellenic history, while Anna Skribias will shed light on Greek language, culture, and history through the lens of ‘Komboloi’.

The event is open to all individuals interested in Hellenic Studies at the primary and secondary levels in alignment with NESA Standards, as specified on the Registration Form (priced at $65 per person).

The conference will take place at the AHEPA NSW Hall located at 394-396 Princes’ Highway Rockdale, NSW.
