The Greek financial crisis, which unfolded in 2009, captured the world’s attention. Throughout this challenging period, political cartoonists from across the globe turned their focus to Greece, utilising various creative techniques such as allegories, visual metaphors, and clever wordplay to delve into the country’s economic turmoil.
Their cartoons depicted themes of destruction, drawing inspiration from Greece’s rich classical past, featuring imagery of crumbling temples, fractured columns, and shattered pottery.
Additionally, some cartoons resorted to negative stereotypes, perpetuating portrayals of Greeks as indolent, inept, or excessively hedonistic.
In her lecture, Dr Anna Tsalapatanis will present her extensive research, which involved a comprehensive analysis of a diverse collection of cartoons from the period of the financial crisis. By examining cartoons from both domestic and international media, she will identify common themes, draw insightful comparisons, and explore their profound significance.
