Michael Zavros is not one for doing things in half measure. The acclaimed Hellenic Australian artist from has recreated a hyperreal large-scale image of the Parthenon in Brisbane. Zavros wants the locals to get a taste of Greece without venturing too far.
7 News Australia, featured a report on the project and said it will transport the iconic Athens Acropolis to Brisbane, Australia, and with such meticulous precision that the distinction may be imperceptible, until you try to walk into the Acropolis.
Neos Kosmos will be speaking to Zavros, who has in recent years focused in contemporary reflections of ancient Hellenic aesthetics and hedonism such as the even Raise the Roof – Dionysus Redux curated by Zavros at Lina at Brisbane’s Southbank last year.
The project will also features a pop-up Greek café just at the foot of the uncompromising breathtaking mural of the Parthenon on the Acropolis. The work, by Zavros, will be unveiled later this month at the Queensland Art Gallery- Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).
Zavros has made a name for himself in creating neo-pop hyper-real, yet ethereal paintings, and sculptures. His work wedges between Classical Greek notions of perfection and astonishing beauty, yet always with ironic or even darker undercurrents. The aptly named, and tongue-in-cheek titled, “Acropolis Now” mural will also be a focus, as was the ancient Parthenon, for discussions and forums.
