Australia’s newly appointed Ambassador to Greece, Ms Alison Duncan, paid a visit to the Greek Centre in Melbourne before her departure to Greece, receiving a warm welcome from President Bill Papastergiadis OAM of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) and key members of the GCM Board.
This visit aimed to strengthen the longstanding relationship between Australia and the Greek Community of Melbourne, emphasising their shared dedication to cultural understanding and bilateral ties.
During the visit, productive discussions took place between Ms Duncan and the GCM representatives.
They exchanged personal experiences from Greece, applauding Ms Duncan’s commitment to learning the Greek language during her three-year appointment.
The GCM representatives highlighted their involvement in various bilateral agreements, including the Tourist Working Visa Agreement.
Mr Papastergiadis also stressed the GCM’s efforts in lobbying for progress on a bilateral Health agreement.
The GCM board members provided insights into the services offered at the Greek Centre, which included Greek Lawyers, the National Bank of Greece, and plans for the establishment of the Greek National Tourism office.
Ms Duncan expressed her excitement upon learning that the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) would soon open an office at the GCM’s renowned Greek Centre on Lonsdale Street in Melbourne.
This office is expected to serve as a valuable bridge between the two countries, fostering stronger connections.
During the discussions, the Ambassador-designate reiterated Australia’s ongoing support for initiatives promoting Greek language and culture.
In addition to cultural collaboration, both the Ambassador and the GCM Board explored potential areas of cooperation for the future.
Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome and hospitality extended by the GCM, Ms Duncan reiterated her desire to nurture and enhance the relationship between the GCM and her office, ensuring its continued growth.
