For over a decade the Greek Film Society in Sydney have been screening films for those interesting in Greek cinema.

The final screening for this season will be the 2021 film Journey to Ikaria… utopia?

It will be hosted on Thursday June 29 at 7pm, at the Greek Atlas Community and Cultural Centre, 96 Illawarra Rd, Marrickville.

A synopsis of the film describes it as “a beautifully shot documentary about the Aegean Island of Ikaria where centenarians abound, and its lifestyle and festivities attract young people from around the world.”

“The communal life and hardships of the past are narrated by older islanders while younger people talk about their special ties to the island. Narrating multiple stories that reflect the island’s history up to recent times, the documentary reveals the island’s uniqueness and independent lifestyle.”

After the screening there will be a Q&A Skype with the director Manolis Papadakis.

A one-month membership fee of $5 is available, with a one-off screening, for those interested.

Food will be available at the centre’s restaurant before the screening from 5.30pm, so for those wishing to have a meal you can SMS your name and number of people 0420352010 by next Tuesday the 27th.

The second season for the year will kick off in September with two feature-length documentaries from the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.
