The Museum of Cycladic Art has announced a new exhibition, titled ‘Chaeronea, 2 August 338 BC: A Day That Transformed History’ officially opening on 14 December.
The collection, exhibited until 31 March 2024 delves into the pivotal day that propelled Alexander the Great onto the global stage as one of the most influential figures in human history.
Curated by Dr Panagiotis Iossif and Dr Ioannis Fappas, it is part of the Museum’s captivating new series, ‘Human Histories’ and will be housed in the esteemed Stathatos Mansion.
The exhibition also sheds light on the Battle of Chaeronea, a critical moment in the shift from the Classical to the Hellenistic era.
This legendary battle solidified Macedonian dominance in Greece and the eastern Mediterranean under the reign of Philip. It was on this momentous day that the young prince Alexander, at just eighteen years old, made his remarkable entrance onto the political and military landscape, playing a decisive role in the defeat of the Theban Sacred Band.
Through the display of approximately 260 archaeological artifacts from 25 Greek museums, two foreign museums, and four private collections, visitors will have a unique and privileged opportunity to connect with the great king.
The exhibition focuses on the clash of two worlds, acting as a catalyst for the birth of the new Hellenistic era, which reshaped the course of history.
As part of the ‘Human Histories’ series, the Museum aims to narrate significant events through carefully selected objects, not solely for their aesthetic value but primarily for their pivotal role in shaping specific historical moments. By exploring events such as the Battle of Chaeronea, the exhibition aims to delve into the essence of humanity, its influence on historical events, and the range of emotions it evokes.
Complementing the exhibition, the Museum will provide a comprehensive scientific catalog and an educational program, ensuring a rich and immersive experience for all visitors.
To enhance the research efforts of the Museum, an international scientific conference will be held, featuring Greek and foreign specialists.
These experts will present their findings on the Battle of Chaeronea and human activities in the region, spanning the entire period of antiquity. The conference proceedings will subsequently be published in an esteemed academic publication, furthering the Museum’s commitment to advancing scholarly research.
