An evening of celebration to honour the late composer Yannis Markopoulos and his remarkable contributions to music, particularly his songs centered around the theme of Migration will take place at La Boîte Performance Space in Sydney.
This event will also showcase a selection of his other renowned compositions and pay tribute to his lasting impact. Attendees can anticipate a selection of Migration songs by Markopoulos, along with his timeless classics.
Yannis Markopoulos, widely recognised for his composition “Who Pays the Ferryman” from the BBC series, collaborated with esteemed performers such as Dalaras, Alexiou, and Halkias, among others. His diverse repertoire encompassed various themes, including Migration, Macedonian and Cretan music and culture, soldier experiences, working-class struggles, and more.
Markopoulos composed music for films, concerts, and dances, creating a unique style characterised by the integration of traditional Cretan instruments and his extraordinary musical talent.
On June 10th, 2023, Yannis Markopoulos passed away at the age of 82, leaving behind his wife, vocalist Vassiliki Lavina, and daughter Eleni.
In commemoration of his remarkable career, this event is presented by the La Boite regular performers, curated by renowned singer, guitarist, and bouzouki player Sotiris Prokopiou.
The program will feature the exceptional talents of Yannis Logothetis on piano, the captivating voices of Felicia Harris and Marina Thiveos.
Additionally, Eleni Elefterias will perform a couple of original songs related to migration, arranged by Felicia Harris, as a dedicated tribute to the esteemed composer.
