The voting for the election of the leader of main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance will be held on 10 September 2023.
A second round, if necessary, will be held on 16 September 2023, according to the party’s Central Committee decision.
The decision of the roadmap for the elections of the new leader passed with 160 votes against 88.
Euclid Tsakalotos officially announced his candidacy for SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leadership at an event held in Athens, AMNA reported.
He said that according to his proposal and view “SYRIZA should remain a part of the Left”.
Tsakalotos also said that SYRIZA’s identity was vague in the last elections adding that “Our aim is to give strength to the people”.
Born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands in 1960, Tsakalotos whose family hails from Patras studied politics, philosophy and economics as an undergraduate at Oxford, where he later completed his PhD in economics in 1989.
He taught at the University of Kent before returning to Athens as a professor at Athens University of Economics.
Tsakalotos is a member of the political party SYRIZA and has served as a Member of the Hellenic Parliament since 2012.
Throughout his career, he has held various important positions, including Minister of Finance and Chief Negotiator of Greece during the country’s debt crisis.
Tsakalotos is known for his expertise in economic matters and his contributions to shaping Greece’s economic policies.
