Dr Andonis Piperoglou, the inaugural Hellenic Senior Lecturer of Global Diasporas at the University of Melbourne, will deliver a captivating lecture titled “Launching ‘Little Greece’: Transcultural Place Naming and Narratives of Migration” on August 3.

The seminar is part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, hosted by the Greek Community of Melbourne, and will take place at the Greek Centre.

The lecture will delve into the history of place naming within the context of Greek migration, with a particular focus on the recent naming of a precinct as ‘Little Greece’ in Marrickville, Sydney.

Through oral testimonies, diaspora media reportage, and street-level visual culture, Dr Piperoglou will illuminate how suburbs like Marrickville, enriched by diverse migrant communities, have become sites of transcultural exchange.

By exploring the intricate interplay of ethnic community building and the framing of suburbs, the lecture will challenge notions of ethnic singularity and offer insights into the coexistence and interaction of various diasporic subjects.

Dr Andonis Piperoglou’s expertise in migration and ethnic history, along with his extensive research on Greek migration to Australia, promises a thought-provoking and enriching discourse.

The Greek Community of Melbourne is committed to promoting and preserving Greek history, culture, and heritage in Australia.

Through initiatives like the Greek History and Culture Seminars, the community aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Greek contributions to the broader Australian society.
