In Magnesia, a relentless battle against raging wildfires continues, with firefighters, police, volunteers, and residents working tirelessly throughout the night. Despite their heroic efforts, the fire that broke out in Velestino yesterday and tragically claimed two lives remains unyielding, AMNA reported.
In the early hours of Thursday morning (Greece time), emergency services issued urgent evacuation messages to residents via the emergency number 112. The call for evacuation first reached the residents of Melissatika, directing them to head towards Volos at 1.30 am.
Subsequently, at 5.30 am, further messages were dispatched for the evacuation of Chrysi Akti Panagia, Velanidia, Marathos, and Kritharia. Minutes later, at 5.46 am, additional evacuation orders were issued for the areas of Pefkakia, Alykes, Ag. Georgios, and Nea Aghialos.
In the battle against the inferno, strong ground forces are working tirelessly in Volos, aided by three airplanes and one helicopter, which were deployed early Thursday to combat the flames from the sky.
Meanwhile, on the island of Rhodes, flames have rekindled in the villages of Vati and Gennadi, keeping firefighters on high alert. On Corfu, the fire may be receding, but scattered fires still pose a threat. Karystos is also facing ongoing challenges, with fires continuing to burn in the areas of Antias and Platanistos.
The situation remains critical, and authorities are urging residents in affected areas to stay vigilant and adhere to evacuation orders for their safety and the safety of others. The dedication and resilience of the firefighting teams, supported by volunteers and the local community, are a testament to the unwavering determination to combat the devastating wildfires and protect lives and properties at all costs.
