A wildfire that broke out in the northwest part of Chios Island was successfully contained and fully controlled on Monday (Greece time).
The fire, estimated to have consumed approximately 60 hectares of forest, originated after a car crash near the Katavasi-Diefcha crossroads, causing dry grass to catch fire and quickly spread to the nearby forest due to strong winds.
Chios Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection, Panagiotis Mandalas, reported that the fire was brought under control at 11am on Monday, thanks to the dedicated efforts of firefighters who battled the blaze for over 14 hours in challenging terrain.
Firefighting aircraft and helicopters provided crucial support during the operation.
Meanwhile, a slight rise in temperatures is expected in most parts of the country accompanied by rain and storms in northern Greece. According to Athens National Observatory’s meteo.gr weather service, maximum temperatures will increase by 3 degrees Celsius in western Greece and Crete compared to Sunday.
The recent 2-week heatwave with record temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius also had a significant impact on the temperature of the Greek seas, leading to notable increases ranging from 1 to 5 degrees Celsius in different regions.
This data, processed by the Meteo service of the National Observatory of Athens, highlights the severity of the ongoing heatwave across Greece.
