In a surprising twist, tennis legend Mark Philippoussis has reunited with world No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas, just 60 days after the pair parted ways.

Greek news outlets reported on the major shake-up in Tsitsipas’ coaching team, revealing that Philippoussis’s return means the removal of Tsitsipas’ father, Apostolos, from his player’s box during non-grand slam events.

The news of their split back in May had left fans devastated, as Philippoussis had been known for being a stabilising and calming influence on the talented yet sometimes turbulent tennis star.

Tsitsipas had struggled to maintain a harmonious relationship with both his parents, making Philippoussis’ presence all the more significant.

Now, under revised contractual terms, Philippoussis is back with Tsitsipas, and they have already been seen together at the Los Cabas Open in Mexico.

The coaching collaboration is expected to continue during the upcoming US Open, which begins on August 28, 7News reported.

The duo has previously tasted success together, with Tsitsipas reaching the French Open final in 2021 and the Australian Open final in January.

Philippoussis, who began mentoring Tsitsipas on a casual basis, officially joined the team in July 2022, following Tsitsipas’ infamous meltdown during his loss to Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon.

Apostolos had coached his son throughout his entire career, while Tsitsipas’ mother, Julia Apostoli, a Russian-born Greek former professional player, has also played a role in his player’s box.

However, during the Italian Open in May, Tsitsipas was heard yelling towards his box, appearing to ask his mother to leave after she was allegedly giving instructions in Russian during the match against Russian star Daniil Medvedev.

Philippoussis’ influence on Tsitsipas’ game was widely acknowledged during the Australian Open earlier this year, as he played a crucial role in the Greek player’s run to the final.

Tsitsipas had praised Philippoussis, describing him as a calming presence during the tournament.

Although their paths diverged in May, Tsitsipas stated that he still maintained a good relationship with the Australian tennis legend, stating that he needed a “less is more” approach to his coaching setup.

With Philippoussis back on board, it remains to be seen how this reunion will impact Tsitsipas’ performance and if their collaboration will lead to further achievements on the court.

Tennis enthusiasts worldwide are eagerly anticipating the duo’s partnership and hoping for even more successes in the future.
